Belgium … frites

first_imgBelgium the Football Team is like Belgium the Country: the whole is less — monumentally less — than the sum of its parts. In the liveliest game of the tournament to date, Italy, ranked 12th in the world by FIFA, gave Belgium such a consummate lesson in pragmatic, polished football that Marc Wilmots’ men will have wondered where their own 2nd place FIFA ranking came from. Italy scored once more in the 92nd minute, Graziano Pelle punishing the Belgians as a schoolmaster would an errant lad. A break on the counter, a defense caught off guard, a hapless keeper — and a murderous goal. This Italian side looks seriously good. I’m sticking my neck out on only the fourth day of a very long tournament to say: They will win Euro 2016.Additional reporting by Satya Varadarajan. By Tunku Varadarajan The Linesman The POLITICO (football) 24 By Tunku Varadarajan and Satya Varadarajan The Linesman Beautiful game’s harsh politics By Tunku Varadarajan In truth, these are preposterous numbers, especially when it comes to big match temperament. Belgium were schooled, and schooled thrillingly. It was Italian nous versus Belgian naivety. Before the match, this spectator’s heart was with Wilmots’ side: On paper it is a beguiling collection of players, boasting skill, vigor, speed and no small amount of exoticism. Italy isn’t even at full strength for Euro 2016, missing some key players due to injury. But none of that mattered on a combative night in Lyon. When we speak of the “BBC” in football today, we refer to “Bale, Benzema and Cristiano,” Real Madrid’s incisive forward line. After tonight, I’m inclined to say the letters stand for “Barzagli, Bonucci and Chielini,” Italy’s back line. Together, they nullified the big, strong menace of Romelo Lukaku, Belgium’s center-forward, suffocating him so completely that you’d think he’d been tied up and duct-taped.Eden Hazard, Belgium’s captain, was described as “anonymous” by the commentators: but that was a state thrust upon him by the Italians. They simply snuffed him out in the first half. Only Radja Nainggolan — the man with a Sumatran Batak father and an execrable haircut — was sharp; and only Kevin De Bruyne managed a degree of freedom.Italy’s first goal come in the 32nd minute, and was a moment of cerebral, geometric beauty. Leonardo Bonucci delivered a long pass from behind his own 25-yard line all the way up the field to Emanuele Giaccherini, unmarked, deep in Belgian territory. He tamed the ball, swivelled and shot, leaving Thibaut Courtois — the Belgian goalkeeper who looks like a young Charles de Gaulle — without a chance.Belgium were infinitely better after the break, clearly mortified by their own first-half lassitude. But the Italians gave them so very little: an Italian, they say, is the most generous man in the world … except on a football field. We had long stretches of what the old-fashioned commentators would call end-to-end stuff, yet the Belgians stayed at nil. With minutes to go, Divock Origi, on for the dispiriting Lukaku, had the perfect chance to score an equalizer. But he failed to put head to ball within feet of the Italian net.last_img read more

Too many companies/teams/whatevers have logos that have one side heavy/dominant versus the other, but the logo is centered using the exact middle point. It’s much more pleasing to use the middle point of the weight of the image.  Members Link to post Members WavePunter Share on other sites Is the 42-yardline thing a rule? My biggest issue with it is that it punishes teams with long, slender logos, while teams with taller, thinner logos could get away with a much larger midfield logo WavePunter Share this post Posted September 26, 2016 logo that was easily covered up with buc flag. I realize the tail sticks out of the sunburst more than the nose, but the sunburst should really be centered on the 50-yardline, rather than the entire logo as a whole.. The differences between the length of the nose and tail are visually negligible, so throwing off the balance of the entire logo to account for it looks very awkward.. 13,075 aawagner011 Share on other sites 271 Share on other sites Members Location:Atlanta, GA Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Members 1 0 Members Page 1 of 2   2,517 Share on other sites I like the huge logos like the Texans have gone to with the new turf.
