Thursday Update: Hotshot Crews On Standby For Swan Lake Fire

first_imgMost of the new growth was to the northwest and northeast away from the Sterling highway and 5 ½ miles from the community of Sterling. Sarah Saarloos, with the Division of Forestry: “It continues to burn in that limited protection area of the refuge. The fire burned West into that 2017 East Fork Fire star, so there was movement to the northwest and northeast, similar to the pattern we saw yesterday. We didn’t see any movement South towards the highway so it’s still 2.7 miles North of the Sterling Highway.” Miller: “We did this to minimize the amount of folks that are back there, we had some sightseers going back there to get a closer look. We also want to make sure that any of the firefighters traveling back and forth have a safer route.” The Sterling Highway visibility warning is still in effect around Mile 68 and 75. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution driving through the fire area due to heavy smoke. Steve Miller with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: “We are still just monitoring the fire. What we do now have is a crew that if we do determine that we need to do some suppression activities we can, we have not actively suppressed this fire at all, but we have people setup. Right now it is moving in the best possible direction it can move. The crews are just in case it moves towards one of the existing fire breaks we can either burn off an existing fire break and stop it from heading in a certain direction. We just now have a crew in place to do that.”  FacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享As fire managers continue to monitor the Swan Lake Fire, the Pioneer Peak Hotshots and Gannett Glacier Fire Crews are on standby and ready to assist with the 6,951 acre fire north of Sterling when necessary.Aerial photo taken 6/13/19The Fire was estimated at 6,951 acres after a reconnaissance flight Wednesday evening, nearly doubling in size since the previous estimate the night before. Fire managers with the Division of Forestry are working collaboratively with refuge personnel to manage the fire to reduce future wildland fire hazards and enhance wildlife habitat. The fire is located in an area where no values are threatened or where the likelihood of fire impact to values has been mitigated. The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has closed the Mystery Creek Road, East Fork Moose River and Enstar Pipeline right-of-way which are north of the Sterling Highway along the eastern edge of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The closure will remain in effect through July 11. Questions or requests for copies of the closure order or maps should be directed to the Refuge at (907) 262-7021. People with  recreational-related questions should contact the Refuge visitor center at (907) 260-2820.last_img read more

Magic make few roster moves, expect to win after playoff run

#Nextchat: HR and Recruiting — Contestants in an Amazing Race?

first_imgOn the reality TV series “The Amazing Race” teams of of two people compete in a race around the world as they battle to arrive first at specific destinations and hope to avoid elimination from the competition by completing tasks that test their strength logic, courage and ability to negotiate. The interesting twist on the show is that the two people on each team have some sort of pre-existing personal relationship; spouses, friends, parent/child, etc. These relationships, with their accompanying histories and backstories, add depth to the inevitable drama that arises during trying circumstances.Sounds similar to what can happen when HR practitioners and recruiters team up together. Recruiters and HR practitioners often find themselves locked in an endless battle based on mutual distrust, dislike and downright avoidance yet these two groups need to work as partners – not adversaries – in order to accomplish their shared goal of hiring and retaining great talent. Whether one believes that Recruiting should be part of the HR Department or not it’s critical that practitioners in both areas understand each other in order to work together more effectively.  After all, with shared understanding both HR practitioners and recruiters can build effective relationships with hiring managers, candidates, and employees while delivering value to their organizations. Please join @WeKnowNext at 3 p.m. ET on Feb. 26 for #Nextchat, with special guest Robin Schooling (@RobinSchooling), managing director/consultant at Silver Zebras. We’ll take a look at some critical areas where the gap can be closed to make that sure HR and Recruiting can “win the race” together.Q1:  Should recruiting be part of HR?  Why or why not?Q2:  Many HR departments operate with a “staffing” model versus recruiting.  Is this an issue?   Q3:  What does HR do/not do that impedes the ability of recruiters to do their job?Q4:  What do recruiters (in-house or third party) do that HR practitioners do not like or understand?Q5:  Should in-house recruiters have access to employee HR data?  Why or why not?Q6:  Who has responsibility for employee retention? HR?  Recruiting? Should they?Q7:  Do HR and Recruiting measure the same things?  What should they measure?Q8:  Recruiters focus quite a bit on employer brand. What is HR’s role and do they help or hinder efforts?Q9:  HR pros – what will strengthen YOUR relationship with recruiters?  Recruiters – what will strengthen YOUR relationship with HR?last_img read more

Top 5 Hottest Product Launches of 2007

first_imgSo far in 2007 we’ve seen some exceptional web app launches. From video tomicro-blogging, new startups have transformed the web landscape. So what defines a ‘hotlaunch’? Obviously, a great product is essential, but also the ability to generatebuzz. So let’s take a look at the startup launches that have packed the most powerful punch in ’07.The selections below are in order of impact (number 1 having had the biggest). Ourcriteria? Mostly, huge user growth in a short period of time. But another importantfactor is getting maximum press and blogosphere exposure – i.e. there is a lot of buzzabout these startups prior to launch, or shortly after. Note that these are 2007 launches – e.g. Twitter, an obvious candidate otherwise, launched late 2006. We also haven’t counted big company product launches, such as the iPhone. Here then is our top 5:5. Babelgum Babelgum is a free, on-demandInternet TV experience. Set-up of the downloadable app is extremely easy and videocontent begins to stream immediately once logged in. A slick interface and TV-like feelfurther enhance the experience. Where Babelgum lacks is in the content column. Thecompany plans to initiate a 50/50 revenue-sharing program with publishers with aguaranteed minimum CPM of $5.00, which is very reasonable.Since launching just over a month ago, Babelgum has piggy-backed off the success of Joost. Internet TV seems to be an optimalchoice for many traditional TV viewers, as it provides the high-quality programming of TVwith the benefits of the Internet (i.e. free, on-demand).4. Tumblr Tumblr is a new way to share photos, quotes, text, links, chat, or videos. The interface of this micro-blogging platform is very slickand well-designed. The clean look is extremely similar to that of the WordPress back-end, down to the useof the word “Dashboard”. So far, the simple concept and refreshing designhave paid off for the company.Like Babelgum, Tumblr can attribute a large part of its fame to the success of acompetitor – Twitter in this case. The recent growth of the micro-blogging space has been phenomenal. Other notables in thespace include Jaiku, Pownce, Moodmill, and Hictu.3. Mahalo Mahalo is a human-powered search engine. Theeditorial team comprises in-house guides, as well as outsourced editors under the Mahalo Greenhouseprogram. These editors are paid $10-15 to create search engine results pages (SERPs) forthe web’s most searched terms. In essence, Mahalo is creating SEO-tailoredinformational pages, somewhat akin to what Wikipedia has done.Mahalo is headed by Silicon Valley veteran Jason Calacanis, formerly of Weblogs, Inc. and Netscape. Calacanis is hoping thisnew engine will outperform traditional algorithm-based search engines, such as Google and Yahoo. Thus far, the popularity and exposure of theendeavor have to be attributed to the celebrity status that Calacanis brings to thetable.2. Pownce Pownce is a new way of sharing things. Messages, links, files, and events can quickly and easily be sent to friends, family, andcolleagues with very little hassle. You have the flexibility of being able to share withone person, a group of people, or your whole list. This web-based service is alsoavailable as a downloadable app, powered by Adobe’s new AIR platform. Many are comparing Pownce to Twitter, although I’m not convinced this is a goodcomparison. In any case, due to the generic nature of the offering, competitors includethe likes of e-mail, IMs, as well as file-sharing programs among others. The small team of four is led by Kevin Rose of Digg fame. Much of the hype and buzz surrounding thelaunch of Pownce has to be credited to the fame of Rose. If Pownce does prove to be asuccess, it would be Rose’’s third hit in a row (Revision3 being the other).1. JoostSimilar to Babelgum, Joost is an on-demand Internet TV service – and it ranksas our hottest product launch of 2007. The downloadable app allows viewers the ability tostream high quality programming anytime, anywhere. Joost has signed numerous contentdistribution deals and pulled in many top-tier advertisers.Joost is led by the powerhouse duo of Niklas Zennström andJanus Friis(of KaZaA and Skype fame). When the two announced they were working ona new Internet TV start-up late last year, the world stopped to listen. Known as theVenice Project while in stealth-mode, Joost launched early this year to much fanfare. VCslined up to finance the new venture, as the probability of success seemed certain underthe current management team. With all due respect, Zennström and Friis could havelaunched a social network for European table-cloth enthusiasts and it probably would havestill garnered the same amount of publicity and acclaim.BONUS: TruemorsAll jokes aside, this low-budget GuyKawasaki side project did cause quite a stir when it launched in mid-May. Thepremise: users report rumors via e-mail, text, or phone. Popular rumors make it to thefront page in a Digg-like fashion. In other words, Truemors is “Digg for rumors”.Most attribute the success of the launch not to the service itself, but to the starpower of Guy Kawasaki. The idea is novel, but this leads many to believe that thesustainability and long-term prospects of the company are questionable at best.ConclusionWhat do you think of our selections?
