Families in cars can drive through the scenes hearing Scriptures read and carols that celebrate the holiday season. It has become a Christmas tradition for many people in the neighborhood and the only Christmas story for some. It takes more than 100 people to complete each evening’s performance. Led by Reverend Ricky Hoyt, members of the congregation will act out the story of Hanukkah. Afterward, the children will go to their religious education classes and Rev. Hoyt will preach a sermon on the theme of following through on our dreams even if it doesn’t look like it will come true. The church has never done the Hanukkah story in quite this way, but it is one of the Jewish holidays that they’ve honored most years. As a congregation, Unitarian Universalists draw upon the religious teachings of many of the world’s faiths to help individuals build their own theology. Sunday Health: Hanukkah Health Fair What: The combination of family togetherness, nutritious food and regular exercise promotes healthy individuals and a healthy society overall. However, during this festive season, families tend to engage in even unhealthier habits than usual. Congregation Beth Shalom and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital will jointly present a Hanukkah Health Fair to promote the messages that: (1) Holiday health and fitness equal fun – not drudgery, and (2) Family time promotes better physical and emotional health. Join us in the hospital parking lot adjacent to McBean Parkway and Avenida Navarre for a fun and educational afternoon filled with Israeli dancing, Hanukkah-robics, a “Big as a Maccabee” fitness assessment, a “Latke Lite” healthy cooking demonstration, comedy improv and “Hanukkah Ha Ha’s” (laughter, after all, is the best medicine), health screenings and information including blood pressure screenings, breast cancer awareness and organ donor information. There will also be information about parenting, healthy families and dental health. Face painting and crafts, a visit from an LAFD fire engine and ambulance and a Sheriff’s Department patrol car will also be featured. The event will culminate with the lighting of the third candle on the Hanukkah menorah and a sing-along with the Congregation Beth Shalom children’s choir. Guests who attend are encouraged to participate in the Holiday Food Drive to benefit the SCV Food Pantry. Please bring nonperishable food items to advance the well-being of our less fortunate neighbors this holiday season. For information, call (661) 254-2411 or (661) 253-8060.
